Milla grew up with the Russian Orthodox religion at the paternal family's estate in Zlopek. Her family leave the Soviet Union for political reasons when they immigrate to London in 1980, when she was five years old. The family immigrated later to Sacramento in California and moved seven months later to Los Angeles. Her parents divorced soon after their arrival in Los Angeles. She has also an half brother named Marco who's the result of the relationship of her father with an Argentine woman.


Her Serbian father Bogić Jovovich works as medical doctor in Kiev, where he meets her mother the Russian actress Galina Jovovich (née Loginova). Her mother was born in Tuapse (now Russia) but moved with her family to Dnipropetrovsk (now Ukraine) in her childhood. Her mother played in several Russian films as actress.


Her paternal great-grandfather Bogić Camić Jovović, was a flag-bearer of the Vasojevići clan and officer in the guard of King Nicholas I of Montenegro. Her paternal grandfather Bogdan Jovović was commander in the Pristina military area. He investigated finances in Skopje and Sarajevo, where he uncovered a massive gold embezzlement by the military (a different version of the story claims that he was the person who took the gold). He was punished for refusing to testify against a criminal friend, and was sentenced to prison by the government. He escaped to Albania because he was affraid that the goverment would arrest him. He moved later to Kiev where he died in the year 2000.

She marries with boyfriend Shawn Andrews on-screen in 1992, while filming ''Dazed and Confused''. Shawn was 21 and Milla was 16, but the marriage was cancelled by her mother two months later. She moved to London with musician Chris Brenner, where she met musician Stuart Zender who becomes her new boyfriend. The couple lived together from may 1994 until october 1995. She had a relation with photographer Mario Sorrenti in Las Vegas from 1995 until 1997. She married with movie director Luc Besson in 1997 and the couple divorced in 1999. She becomes friends with the young poet/musician Anno Birkin in 1998. She had a relationship with him just before he died in a car accident in 2001. She had a relation of seven months with former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante in 2000. She currently resides in Los Angeles and New York with her husband the movie director Paul W. S. Anderson. She met Paul on the set of Resident Evil in 2002, who was the director of the movie. The couple separates for a specific time, before they become a couple again and the pair married on 22-08-2009. Their daughter Ever was born on 03-11-2007 and daughter Dashiel Edan was born on 01-04-2015.


Martial Arts


She is trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu since young age and is also trained in karate and kickboxing. She has a 3th degree blackbelt in taekwondo and is trained in the use of martial arts weapons.


Model Career


Her mother wanted to make new head photos of Milla and was recommended to go to male model turned photographer Carlos Reynosa. He became intrigued by her deep presence and beauty during the shoot. Carlos advices her mother to bring her to the modelling agency Prima / East West in Los Angeles which he represents. She signed a contract at the agency straight after her arrival. Carlos showed her pictures to famed photographer Herb Ritz, who immediately recognized her beauty and strong persona. Herb booked the 11-year-old Milla next day for an covershoot in Italian fashion magazine Lei'' and "The Face" Magazine out of London. She gets international fame when she was spotted by the legendary photographer Richard Avedon. He was head of Revlon's marketing department at the time and he placed her in Revlon's "Most Unforgettable Women in the World" advertisements along with established models Alexa Singer and Sandra Zatezalo. He hires her for an shoot in the American Edition of Mademoiselle but the magazine refuses to place her on the cover because she was to young for the shoot. He threatened to stop the shooting for publication, and the magazine changed their mind. The magazine placed her on the cover and made her the youngest model ever who appears on the cover of an American Women's Fashion Magazine.


Her work with Carlos, Herb and Richard leads to success, which brings her new model contracts. She appeared in all major fashion magazines in the US. There are covershoots and articles about her in magazines Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Harper's Bazaar, Grazia Magazine, pink, Gear, Radar, New York Times, Femme Fatales, Jane, Premiere, Playboy, Celebrity Sleuth, Elle and many more.


She appeared in campaigns for Banana Republic, Christian Dior, Damiani, Donna Karan, Gap, Versace, Calvin Klein, DKNY, Coach, Giorgio Armani, H&M, and Revlon. She is international spokesmodel for L'Oréal cosmetics since 1998 and was picked by Spanish clothing line Mango as their new spokesmodel in 2006. She was claimed as Gianni Versace's "favourite supermodel" in an article in 2003. She was the face of Calvin Klein's Obsession and Christian Dior's Poison for over 10 years. She became also the new face for Donna Karan's Cashmere Mist fragrance in 2009. She became the highest paid supermodel in the world with $10.5 million earnings, which gave her a place in Forbes magazine's "Richest Supermodels of the World" list in 2004.


Fashion design


She launches together with fellow model Carmen Hawk a clothing line called Jovovich-Hawk in 2003. They opened a showroom in New York City's Greenwich Village on 13-09-2005, and the line lasted for 5 years. The clothing was designed by herself and Carmen whose atelier was based in Los Angeles. Their clothing could be found at Harvey Nichols, Fred Segal in Los Angeles and over 50 stores around the world. The line is awarded with the ''girl-about-town cult status'' by Vogue. The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and US Vogue have nominated Jovovich-Hawk for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award in november 2006. The line was nominated as finalist, but Doo-Ri Chung won the top prize. Jovovich-Hawk has signed a deal in order to design a diffusion collection for Target's Go International campaign in 2007. The girls follow in the footsteps of Luella, Paul & Joe and Proenza Schouler. They ended the clothing line in 2008 because the line costs to many time for the girls.


Charity


She does also charitable work, what plays a major part in her life. She serves as master of charity ceremonies and is co-chaired with Elizabeth Taylor for the amfAR and Cinema Against AIDS event at the Venice Film Festival. She has been heavily involved with The Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, as well as The Wildlands Project.

She is pushed by her mother to become actress and Galina sends her to the Professional Actors School in California when she was ten years old.


Action Movie Career


She made her action debut as Maya Carlton in this story where George Kuffs (played by Christian Slater) has lost his job while his girlfriend is pregnant in ''Kuffs'' (1992). He can't see how he can support her and thinks that she's better off without him. He visits his elder brother Brad (played by Bruce Boxleitner) to ask him for a loan, so that he can go to Brazil where a gold-rush is going on. Brad is killed unfortunately while George searches for the killer, in order to take revenge.

She plays mutant Leeloo ''The Fifth Element'' next to Bruce Willis who plays the lead role as cab driver and former elite commando major Korben Dallas, in this story where the universe is threatened by evil in the twenty-third century in ''The Fifth Element'' (1997). The only hope for mankind is the Fifth Element, who comes to earth every five thousand years, in order to protect the humans with four stones of the four elements: fire, water, Earth and air. The Fifth Element travels in an Mondoshawan spacecraft back to earth. She crashes on earth, after her spacecraft is destroyed by the evil Mangalores. She is brought to a lab, where a team of scientists use the DNA remains of her, in order to rebuild the perfect being called Leeloo. She flees to the roof after she manages to escape from the lab. She jumps of the building and falls through the roof in the taxi of Korben. He helps her to escape from the police, while Leeloo tells that she must go to Father Vito Cornelius (played by Ian Holm) to accomplish her mission. The skilled Korben Dallas falls in love with Leeloo, who decides to help her to retrieve the stones. They travel to space in order to steal the stones from industrial Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg (played by Gary Oldman). Leeloo has a great action scene where she fights alone against dozens of mercenary Mangalores in a room.

She plays the lead role as female assassin Alice in this story about scientists who become infected when an virus escaped is in a secret facility called "The Hive" in ''Resident Evil'' (2002). The staff are changed into hungry zombies, when they unleash the mutated Lab "Animals", where they do research on. The complex computer shuts down the base, in order to prevent further infection. Alice is in the Hive to solve the problem but suffers from amnesia due the exposure to nerve gas. She meets an elite military unit who is send by the parent company the Umbrella Corporation. The military team must shut down the computer, before the virus infects the rest of the world. Alice and the team fight their way against dozens of zombies and mutants.

She plays the beautiful Erin next to Samuel L. Jackson who plays the lead role as detective Jack Friar in ''No Good Deed'' (2002). Jack is doing a favor for an friend by searching for an runaway teenager on Turk street. He's kidnapped by criminals during the journey, after he discovered them during their attempt to rob a bank. He's guarded by Erin who the beautiful girlfriend is of the leader. Their contact intensifies and they try to escape together, before the gang returns.

She plays the lead role again as female assassin Alice who awakes in Raccoon City after the battle in the sequel ''Resident Evil: Apocalypse'' (2004). She realizes that the bloodthirsty undead are unleashed in the city that surrounds the secret facility of the Umbrella Corporation. She has bio-genetically forces which are enhanced with new strengths, senses and dexterity, after she discovered that she was an Umbrella experiment. An small group of uninfected people with Jill Valentine (played by Sienna Guillory) a recently demoted member of Umbrella Corp's elite Special Tactics and Rescue Services team and S.T.A.R.S team leader Carlos Oliveira (played by Oded Fehr), fight for their lives against swarms of undead, in the heart of the ravaged Raccoon City. The group is rescued by Alice and they begin an exciting battle to survive. They try to escape the city, before the Umbrella Corporation will destroy the city with a bomb.

She plays female killer Violet Song in this story where an subculture of genetically modified humans are infected by a vampire-like disease, which gives them enhanced speed, incredible stamina and acute intelligence in the late 21st century in ''Ultraviolet'' (2006). The creatures are set apart from "normal" and "healthy" humans what pushes earth to the brink of worldwide civil war, which is aimed at the destruction of the "diseased" population. Beautiful hemophage Violet is infected with the virus that gives her superhuman powers. She protects a nine-year-old boy named Six (played by Cameron Bright), who's marked to death by the human government. Ferdinand Daxus (played by Nick Chinlund) kidnaps Six, and keeps him caught somewhere in his facility. Violet is determined to rescue him, while she fights against hundreds of men in and outside the facility. She rescues Six and kills Ferdinand bloody hard at the end of the movie.


She plays the lead role again as female assassin Alice who travels alone across the Nevada desert and the ruins of Las Vegas to Alaska, after the catastrophe of Raccoon City several years ago in the sequel ''Resident Evil: Extinction'' (2007). She meets Carlos Olivera (played by Oded Fehr), L.J. (played by Mike Epps) and new survivors K-Mart (played by Spencer Locke), Claire Redfield (played by Ali Larter) and Nurse Betty (played by Ashanti) in the desert during her journey. Alice joins the caravan whose mission is to destroy the Umbrella Corporation which is led by the sinister Albert Wesker (played by Jason O'Mara) and head researcher Dr. Isaacs (played by Iain Glen). They must fight against hordes of zombies and the most terrifying creatures on their journey.

She plays the lead role again as female assassin Alice who has failed to destroy the evil Umbrella Corporation in the sequel ''Resident Evil: Afterlife'' (2010). Her deadly battle reaches new heights, while she brings survivors into safety in a world that is ravaged by the virus. She joins a group of survivors who live in a prison, surrounded by the infected area. They want to relocate to the mysterious but supposedly unharmed safe haven also known as Arcadia. The safe place is overrun by thousands of undead when they arrive. Alice and her comrades have no other choise then fight.

She plays Milady de Winter in this story about the three musketeers who are disbanded by Cardinal Richelieu (played by Christoph Waltz), after failing to steal the blueprints of the airship Leonardo Da Vinci's in ''The Three Musketeers'' (2011). The ambitious young D'Artagnan (played by Logan Lerman) has the dream to become a musketeer, but he doesn't know that they are disbanded. The evil employer Milady de Winter has the plan to engulf Europe in war, because she want to seize the French throne. D'Artagnan his dream comes out, after Cardinal Richelieu decides to re-unite the three musketeers. He gets the change to fight with the musketeers, when they get the assignment to stop the plans of Milady de Winter.


She plays the lead role again as female assassin Alice who awakes at home with her husband and daughter Becky (played by Aryana Engineer), but soon realizes that she is actually in the Umbrella Corporation's underground facility in the sequel ''Resident Evil: Retribution'' (2012). She meets Ada Wong (played by Bingbing Li), who worked with Albert Wesker (played by Jason O'Mara) in the past. Jill Valentine (played by Sienna Guillory) and Rain (played by Michelle Rodriguez) are sent by The Red Queen to hunt on them. Alice and Ada try to escape from the Umbrella Corporation testing facility.


She plays Kate Abbott who is newly posted as state department employee on the American embassy in London in ''Survivor'' (2015). Terrorists have plans for a large-scale terrorist attack on Times Square (New York), at New Year's Eve. She tries to stop the terrorists before their plans are carried out.

She plays Alice again in a world where humanity runs on its last legs, after she is betrayed by Wesker in Washington D.C.in the final part ''Resident Evil: The Final Chapter'' (2016). She is the only survivor in humanity's final battle against the undead hordes. She must return to where the nightmare began in Raccoon City, where Umbrella Corporation gathers its forces for a final strike against the only remaining survivors of the apocalypse. She gets help of old friends in a race against time, before humanity is gone forever in the final battle against undead hordes and new mutant monsters.
